Irritated Residents of Trash Can Not Be Transported, Karawang Residents Blockade Roads
Buletan Digital. Dozens of residents of Sinarmulya Village, Karawang Wetan Sub-District, East Karawang District, Karawang Regency, West Java, blocked Jalan Otto Iskandardinata on Thursday (12/13/2018).
The blockade was carried out because residents were annoyed that the garbage had not been transported and scattered on the shoulders until it was in the middle of the road.
The protest was carried out by placing a sofa, a cupboard, and a tree trunk in the middle of the road.
"We have had enough because this pile of garbage is very disturbing," said Agus Jaelani (37), a resident of Sinarmulya Village, Karawang Wetan Sub-District, East Karawang Sub-District, Karawang Regency.
Agus said, the garbage pile produced an unpleasant odor and made residents uncomfortable. Moreover, the rubbish pile was right next to his workshop.
"If it rains like last night, the waste water even seeps into my place of business. It smells very bad," he said.
Agus said, he often found people were throwing garbage at the place at night.
"Some people use motorbikes, some use cars. They throw garbage from vehicles," said Agus. Agus and the villagers asked the Karawang Regency Government to immediately transport waste that was almost two weeks old at the place.
"It's been ten days that no one has transported garbage here. Finally it has piled up, scattered to the middle of the road," said Sherly Ingga, Treasurer of RW 021, Sinarmulya Village.
Sherly said, the pile of garbage threatens the health of residents, especially when it is entering the rainy season.
"Especially the rainy season, we are worried about the health of the residents. The problem is that there are many babies and small children here. We are worried that they will be exposed to bacteria and illness," he said.
Sherly said that she had asked for help from the Environmental and Hygiene Agency (DLHK) of Karawang Regency to transport the garbage. However, to this day garbage is still piled up.
"So we protested and closed the road today," Sherly said.
Meanwhile, Head of DLHK Karawang Wawan Setiawan said that his company only had seven garbage trucks, but three of them were damaged.
"We are nervous because only four trucks operate," Wawan said, when confirmed by telephone.
